Careers in Agriculture - RIST Taster Day

Anne Gough

On Monday July 31 six Year 9 students interested in agriculture took the opportunity of a day of hands-on activities at RIST. Two Year 11 students considering agriculture as part of VCE VM next year also attended. All students participated in aspects of wool handling and shearing, agri tech, agronomy and livestock work. In rotating through these activities students did some soil testing, yard work with dogs and as shown in the photos virtual welding and virtual tractor work. Developments in technology now enable students to learn new skills such as these through the virtual world.

The day concluded with students watching a sheep autopsy and looking at a machinery expo. Students now will be able to make a more informed decision as to whether they want to pursue a Certificate II or III in Agriculture as a School-based apprenticeship in Years 10,11 or 12.
