Principal's Report

Fiona Mulhall

Dear Parents and Carers,

The other morning, I was walking around Hamilton and the sunrise was just beautiful. Standing on the bridge, I noticed the magnificent colours reflected in the still water and the frost starting to melt on the ground.  I was reminded of one of my favourite poems The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

The Road not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveller, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference.

At Monivae College, we believe in a God of Love. That we are loved personally and unconditionally. Furthermore, our purpose is to find meaning and to live a fulfilling and purposeful life.  We can certainly choose to take the road travelled. Thankfully, we have also been given the option to choose the road less travelled and know that God is with us each step of the way. Understanding our unique purpose and mission starts with developing a deep understanding of who we are and recognising this, we become partners in God’s masterpiece of Life.  Our curriculum pathways and subject offerings provide each student with a way to explore and begin to unpack their purpose in life. Students in Years 8 -11 are currently making subject selections and we encourage parents and students to engage in some dialogue in this discernment process.

Year 11 students were given the opportunity to participate in a program called P.A.R.T.Y for Schools program at The Hamilton Alexandra College P.A.R.T.Y stands for Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth. It is run by the Alfred Hospital and utilises real stories and experiences to demonstrate the impact of risk-related trauma on individuals, families and communities. Thank you to the staff who supported the students during this valuable experience.

The new Catholic Education Multi-Enterprise Agreement (2022) was approved, and as mentioned the College adjusted the teaching periods from 50 minutes to 45 minutes to meet this requirement. The staff are working exceptionally hard to ensure students do not miss out on any content. The feedback from the students has been very positive regarding the additional ‘break time’ especially enjoying more time for sports training during lunch.

A reminder the Tutor Learning Program is on each Tuesday and Wednesday from 4-6 pm.  The TLP welcomes all students from 7-12 and it is an opportunity to receive help with general homework or in specialist subject areas. No bookings are required, and students can attend at any time. Students are not restricted to only one night or session. Paid casual boarding is available on these nights please contact the Head of Boarding at mshannon@monivae.vic.edu.au The TLP will conclude week 9 (Thursday 7th Sep).

So, we dive deeper into Term 3 with learning as a focus inside and outside the classroom. I reminded students during an Assembly last week about the importance of embedding a growth mindset in all we do. What can we learn about ourselves that can help us become better people and most importantly a more loving and vibrant Monivae community member?

Kind regards,

Mrs. Fiona Mulhall
