Year 6 Spotlight

Camp Jungai

Year 6 students had an amazing time on their five-day trip to Camp Jungai! The week was filled with adventure and cultural activities that were designed to challenge and extend the students in many different ways. Here are some reflections from the students:

What was your highlight of camp and why?

My favourite part of camp was the water activities.

What is something that challenged or surprised you?

On the canoes and building the rafts we had to work as a team to achieve the best that we could.

I will always remember…

That if we all give everything a go and try our hardest we can achieve the best possible outcome.

~ Hugo, 6C

My highlight of Camp Jungai was the bushcraft/fire making because I set a lot of cotton balls on fire and made a big one in the fireplace.

Something that challenged me was getting sparks to come out of the flint and steel but what surprised me was how easy it is to get a fire started with it.

I will always remember to take what I need, not what I want – otherwise I will become a selfish person.

~ Alena, 6C

What was your highlight of camp and why?

The raft building was my highlight because I really wanted to beat the teams in the first group and when we did I felt really good.

I was surprised by…

I was surprised by how much mud was on the bush walk and how I didn’t get that muddy.

I will always remember

Making pizza

Freezing legs after getting in the water after raft building

Bush craft

Boomerang throwing

Making a bag out of paper bark to hold mud that I made

Finding massive leaves

~ Liam, 6B

My Highlight: I loved the bushwalk because even though I had been dreading it, it went by quickly because I spent my time observing the serene nature and talking with my friends. I had so much fun on the beautiful walk.

What Challenged Me: I was nervous to go on the Possum Pull because it was very high up. At first I didn’t want to go on at all but as more people came off of it, I felt more confident. I felt like I was going to die but as soon as I was in the air, I felt amazing.

What I’ll Always Remember: I will always remember the end of the bushwalk. As we were walking along the track, me and my friend noticed half a tree lying on the ground. Where it had been cut was a black blob imprinted in the log. It resembled a demon with wide eyes, an eerie smile and hundreds of arms.

My highlight of Camp Jungai was definitely all the water activities! They got us out into the sun and trying new things. With raft building, you had to work well as a team to try to get your raft to float on the freezing lake. Canoeing helped us learn how to use the oar and it was so fun trying all the games on the lake with your partner. Everyone in my group gave it a go and we all had fun even though the water was so cold!

Something that challenged but surprised me was the high ropes course. I wasn’t sure if I could do it, but once I got up high into the air I knew I could and I had so much fun! Once you put the harness on, you had to climb up a tall skinny ladder to start the course. The high ropes were 18 metres high and while my group was participating, it was raining! The wire became so cold when you were holding on but I knew if I didn’t do it I would regret it.

The bus ride back from camp will be something in my mind that I will always remember. When we first went on the bus back, almost everyone fell asleep but once the long, windy part had finally ended, we got our energy back and talked for hours to Jess in the back of the bus. We sang songs and played games.

This is an amazing camp and I’m excited for all the years to come.

~ Anna, 6A

My highlight of Camp Jungai was making the fire from scratch. It was such a great team building activity gathering firewood, sticks and dry leaves. It was so great sitting under the sun working together, it was hard work but it is a skill we need in later life.

Something that challenged me was doing the Possum Pull, which is where we go up a rope either straight up or upside down, 18 metres high and we have to try, and drop some toys in a bucket for ten points or hit the instructors for 20 points, which I tried to do. It was very scary to think about but after I did, it was so fun and I wish I could do it again.

I will always remember the bus ride back from camp. Everyone was very tired so there was lots of relaxing at the start but when everyone had their energy back it was so fun. We had a mini riff-off and we talked a lot with Jess in the back of the bus. No matter how long the bus ride was, it felt super quick.

I really loved Camp Jungai and wish I could do it again.

~ Eliza, 6A

My highlight of going to camp Jungai was the 6km bush walk we did on day two. We had to wear these things called gaters. They protect your pants from getting dirty and it also prevents snake bites, but the chance of getting a snake bite in the middle of winter was very low, so it was mainly used to keep your pants clean. The fact that half way through, we would be crossing the Rubicon River was very exciting. Once we came back, we were rewarded with a chocolate brownie/mud cake so it was worth it.

Something that challenged me was the high ropes course on day 4. I tried the tire course because I thought it was easier (it was not). It started raining while I was on the ladder and you had to go on your knees to get through but I made it through and I was happy I got to the top because it was very difficult.

I will always remember…

·   Raft building because I was able to make a raft that floated.

·   Canoeing because I thought it was easy to fall out but it was really fun.

·   Photo rally, where you find photos and find the letter nearby and at the end you make as many words as you can.

·   Finding out my cabin because we found out who we would be with for the next week.
