Visual Arts

In Visual Arts, last week Foundation to year 4 students finished making and painting their clay pieces. Year 3/4 students also completed their inspired β€˜Steampunk’ robots, which they all did an amazing job making and creating them. Year 5/6 finished painting their inspired Keith Haring character sculptures, again the students have produced terrific art pieces. Foundation and Year 1/2 students practised their cutting skills by learning how to make paper Hibiscus flowers, to help decorate our Visual Arts and Culture Studies room, getting ready for our Polynesian Culture for Term 4.Β

Culture StudiesΒ

This week in Culture Studies, students were taught that Polynesia is a large group of islands in the central Pacific Ocean. They were introduced, engaged, and experienced the Polynesian culture byΒ watching the movie β€˜Moana’. Throughout the β€˜Moana’ students were able to observe the Polynesia way by looking at the family values, weather, food, landscape, animals, flowers, traditional clothes, music, arts, celebrations, and their traditions. We had some great discussion before, during and after the movie.Β

PE

This term in PE students have been developing their skills in Aero sports, which is a hybrid version of dance, aerobics and gymnastics. Students have thoroughly enjoyed this program, but as we had a mini break for camp, over the past two weeks we have transitioned into gymnastics.

With teacher support and lots of matting for safety, students have been learning how to land safely (motor bike landing), how to do forward rolls, bunny hops over obstacles, mini cartwheels, developing upper body strength through hand stands against the wall, pushing themselves along with skate boards and climbing and crawling through a mini obstacle course. We have incorporated a number of Gymnastics movements into a Parkour program. Students have been loving the opportunity to jump, climb and play in a safe environment.Β

Also with the beautiful weather this week, we have enjoyed being outside and doing a couple of soccer lessons. The students have been learning how to kick the ball accurately, how to dribble the ball with their feet and not using their hands, and how to shoot for goal. Again it has been a very enjoyable week of soccer skills.

Health

Over the last few weeks we have been working through the Respectful Relationships program and working through Help Seeking and then moving into the topic of Gender and Identity.

Below is an outline from the Department of Educations introduction to the topic of Gender and Identity at the Foundation level.

Β

Evidence base

Children become aware from an early age that characteristics such as gender, language and physical ability differences are connected with privilege and power. They learn by observing the world around them, and by absorbing the spoken and unspoken messages in the patterns that they observe.Β

Β As they become aware of gendered patterns of behaviour, and attempt to fit within the categories that they perceive themselves as belonging to, they can begin to limit their options and this can affect the way they interact with peers.

The early school years are a critical time to challenge stereotypes based on gender and other differences. It is useful to do explicit work with children to acknowledge, explore and celebrate diverse identities. This helps them realise that their likes and dislikes do not have to be limited by their gender or any other characteristics and that their preferences and interest can change and evolve over time.

Β

Once again it has been a fantastic term of Health and PE, with so much effort and active participation from everyone. Well done to all of our wonderful students. Enjoy the holidays and see you next term.

Library NewsΒ

Β

What a busy term we have had in the library. We β€œhired” new library leaders, added lots of books to the system and ran events for Book Week including Recess Storytime and a Writing Competition. Last Friday, we crowned the winners, and also found out who our Reader Leader for Term 3 was.

Β

The class that borrowed the most books in Term 3 was 34A with 243 books. What an amazing effort!Β

Riley P read the most books out of all the students with 27 books. Well done, Riley, keep it up!

Β

Throughout Book Week, students were encouraged to write short stories about a topic of their choice. A panel of teachers then decided on winners in every year level, and also gave honourable mentions to students to encourage them to keep on writing. We were all so impressed by the quality and creativity that the students showed in their pieces. Some stories will additionally be entered into the Fish Creek Writing Competition, a nation wide writing contest hosted by the Fish Creek Literary Festival Fishy Stories. Congratulations to all.Β
