Year 6 News by Holley Allen and Lily Bodycoat

English

Year Six have been working on persuasive writing, spelling and reading. Students have been working on persuasive writing about the importance of family history. Do you know much about your family origin or where your family originated?

We have also been reading a novel called ‘A Ghost in my Suitcase’. It’s about Chinese and French people, with a young girl named Celeste visiting China to spread her mother’s ashes but encounters some GHOSTS!

Spelling is also a key subject in year six, lately we have been focusing on the sounds /ph/ and /sc/. To test our knowledge, we do a spelling test every Friday to see how we have improved over the week.

Maths

During Maths we have been working on data and how to show data by creating different graphs, such as bar and line graphs and side by side column graphs. It is interesting to look at the graphs side by side to compare the data. We have also started learning about prime and composite numbers. A prime number is when it is only divisible by itself and one.

A composite number is when it is divisible by more than just itself and one.

We have also been adding and multiplying some huge numbers!!

Science

In science we have been learning about the states of matter, Solids, Liquids and Gases. A solid is something hard and stable, a liquid will take the shape of the object they are placed in, and a gas can be steam, air, or helium.

Swimming

Year 3 to 6 could participate in swimming sports on Thursday 5th of February at the Euroa swimming pool. The strokes they could choose between were freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, and if you were in year 6 you could be a year 6 helper. If you were swimming and came 1st or 2nd you would go to the next level. District was Friday 13th of February and you would compete against other schools.

Specialist

In specialist we do Art, PE, STEM and Japanese, in STEM we are learning about animal habitats and answer questions about what we learned about at the end. In PE we play lots of games and then focus on something like throwing and catching or tennis. In Japanese we are learning about oni aka a Japanese demon that you throw beans at for the new year. And in art we are doing a honeycomb all about me to make a huge honeycomb.

PE and Art are on a Tuesday this term, and Japanese and STEM are on a Wednesday.

Shrove Tuesday

On Shrove Tuesday we prepared and cooked over 400 pancakes!!!!! Everyone just loves the smell of pancakes and having whatever toppings they choose!!! It was a fantastic day for all! All the funds raised went to Caritas to help the poor and needy.

Buddy Program

As year six students, we start the Buddy program, each student has been given a Foundation student to take care of, help and be friendly to each other.

Mercy Day

Mercy Day was held on the 6th of February. We visited church for a whole school mass, this was the first mass for the new foundation students, and as buddies we had to teach them about the expectations of church. As an afternoon treat Year Six were going to host fun little games, but due to extreme heat it was cancelled, however we cooled off with free Zooper Doopers!
