In Literacy, students have been using The Garden of Broken Things by Freya Blackwood as a source of inspiration for their own writing. Through close reading, students have been identifying different word types within the text and discussing the purpose each plays in shaping meaning. This has supported their understanding of how carefully chosen vocabulary strengthens storytelling.
Alongside this work, we have also been revisiting the structure and purpose of persuasive texts in preparation for writing our own persuasive letters. Students have been recalling the key elements of a persuasive piece, including how ideas are organised logically into paragraphs. We have explored a range of persuasive techniques and discussed how these can be used effectively to influence the reader.
In Numeracy, students have been developing a deeper understanding of decimal numbers, focusing on two-digit decimals between 0 and 1. They have been connecting written and visual representations of decimals to explore how numbers can be broken down into tenths, hundredths, and thousandths. Students have been creating visual models to represent these decimals, comparing their values, and explaining how each digit’s place affects the number’s overall value. This has helped them see the connections between fractions, decimals, and the place value system.
In Health, students have continued their exploration of how the body works. This week, they were treated to a special demonstration of the digestive system led by Wilko, which gave them a hands-on and visual understanding of how our bodies process food.
Next, we will continue learning about other body systems, including the circulatory and respiratory systems. Students will then apply their knowledge by creating their own personalised health plans, incorporating healthy choices around sleep, exercise, and nutrition.
This unit encourages students to think critically about their own wellbeing while developing a deeper understanding of how the body functions.
