Literacy:
In Literacy we have taken a deep dive into The Garden of Broken Things, written by Freya Blackwood. This deep dive entailed looking for meaning from illustrations and making personal connections to the text.
Whilst reading the story students were encouraged to make predictions and focus on the various word and phrasing choices the author made when writing the story and how these choices affected the story telling.
Students then undertook their own writing with a focus on describing the setting and developing characters.
Numeracy:
In Numeracy, we have been revising our place value understanding and renaming numbers. We explored different ways to represent five and six digit numbers, looking at how we can show our numbers in place value charts and on the digital abacus. We continued to strengthen our dice rolling skills when reading, writing, representing, renaming and comparing six digit numbers.
We then began to explore our understanding of fractions. The students practised partitioning shapes into equal parts and describing these parts using halves, thirds, quarters and fifths. We made connections to real-life items such as fairy bread and chocolate to help us understand and represent the fractions and got to create our own fraction food cut-outs for a 'fraction class party!
Inquiry:
For our Term 1 Inquiry focus on 'Health', we have been thinking deeper about our healthy habits, and what health means to us as unique individuals. We explored our personal identities and which factors in our life influence our identity. One particular aspect that impacts health is our social health. We shared how our social health strengthens our overall health and the importance that our relationships and interactions with others has on our life.
Cooking:
Each class enjoyed a cooking session with Mr Marco. Knife skills and food preparation was a focus as each class prepared a noodle salad complete with noodles, carrot, capsicum, lettuce and spring onions. Each student at the completion had a chance to sample their work.
These sessions are always much enjoyed by all the students.
Specialists:
Level 4 Specialists this year have been split into 2 groups - the Suns and the Stars. Students have 3 specialist classes every Tuesday and then one specialist on Wednesday or Thursday. We are still working on the 'ins and outs' but so far so good. Below is our week in icons that the students see on our daily timetable in the classroom.
