Level 2: Connect

What a fantastic fortnight we have had in Year 2! Our classroom have been buzzing with curiosity, creativity and confident learning. Students are showing great enthusiasm during discussions, putting extra effort into their writing, and taking pride in sharing their ideas. It’s wonderful to see their skills and independence growing each week. Thank you for your continued support — we love celebrating these learning moments together!

English

Core Literacy

In Week 3, students learnt the spelling pattern ‘age’ (e.g., baggage, storage, postage), the prefixes mid- and mis- (e.g., midday, miscommunicate), and the heart words does, goes, and please.

In Week 4, students investigated the busy letter ‘y’, focusing on when it makes the short i sound (e.g., mystery, typical, physical). They also learnt about the suffixes -ly and -ish (e.g., lovely, shortish) and practised the heart words pretty, half, and walk.

Looking ahead in Core Literacy:

  • Week 6: Students will continue learning about the busy letter ‘y’, with a focus on the different vowel sounds it can make at the end of words. They will also learn about homophones and the heart words talk, always, and water.
  • Week 7: Students will review their Core Literacy learning from this term.

Reading & Writing

English – Information Texts Unit

Over the past few lessons, students have been learning how to read, analyse and create information texts. They have explored how to identify important facts and recognise the features of information texts in both books and digital sources.

Students practised gathering information about animals such as the parrotfish and sloth using websites and books. They learned how to navigate digital texts by using features like scrollbars, links and drop-down menus. They also compared how information is presented differently in books and online.

As part of their learning, students used graphic organisers to take notes and collect key facts. This process is helping them build skills in research, note-taking, organising ideas and writing clear factual sentences.

We are very proud of the way students are developing their confidence in locating information and presenting it in their own words. With your child we encourage you to continue to explore the Kids National Geographic website found here: https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/

English – Grammar

During our grammar focus students have been learning about simple and compound sentences, focusing on using the conjunctions “and” and “but.” They practised joining two simple sentences to make a compound sentence and learned that “but” shows a change in direction in meaning. Through speaking, whiteboard practice and collaborative activities, students built and wrote their own compound sentences.

Maths

In Maths, students have been exploring place value by working with 2- and 3-digit numbers. We have been learning how numbers are made up of ones, tens and hundreds, and how to rename and regroup numbers. For example, students are practising how 56 can be 5 tens and 6 ones and that it can be regrouped as 3 tens and 26 ones. Through hands-on materials, drawings and number problems, students are building a strong understanding of how numbers can be broken apart and put back together in different ways. This foundation is essential for developing confidence in number.

Inquiry

In Inquiry this term, students are learning about growth and change. We are exploring how people grow and change over time, including physical changes, new skills we develop, and how our responsibilities and interests evolve as we get older. Students will reflect on their own growth and compare what they can do now with what they could do as babies and toddlers.

As part of this learning, we would love your support. Please send in (or email) a photograph of your child as a baby (birth to 1 year old), a toddler (1 to 3 years old), and at their current age. These photos will be used for a classroom activity where students sequence and discuss how they have grown and changed over time. All photos will be treated respectfully and returned.

We look forward to celebrating how much our students have grown!
