ART

(Sorrow of the King – Henri Matisse)

The Grade 1 and 2 students have continued their studies into collage and learnt about one of the original collage artists, Henri Matisse. Matisse used paper cut-outs, or "scissor cut-outs," as a new way to make art when he was sick and could not paint. He called this "painting with scissors" and would cut bright shapes from colourful paper to arrange into lively compositions. Matisse's paper cut-outs are known for their bold, vibrant colours, free-form shapes, and decorative qualities.

Inspired by Matisse’s paper cut outs, the students let the scissors guide them and cut out some interesting shapes out of coloured kinder squares. Some students already had an idea of what they were creating, others let their ideas develop as they went. They moved their shapes around and placed them over each other before gluing them down. When finished the students studied their collage and gave it a title.
