Level 6

We're a great mix in Level 6!

Level 6 Student Learning Highlights: Last Fortnight

Maths

In Maths Level 6 student have engaged in a variety of learning activities focused on the Cartesian plane and coordinate plotting. They have developed a clear understanding of what a Cartesian plane is and practiced plotting coordinates to create various shapes. Additionally, students explored the concept of input and output tables, identifying patterns within these tables. This learning experience also included transforming coordinates on the Cartesian plane, allowing students to visualise changes in position. Furthermore, they worked on developing equations, expressions, and rules to determine these patterns, fostering their analytical skills and enhancing their mathematical reasoning. They have done some amazing work.

Literacy

In other areas, Level 6 students have delved deep into the art of narrative writing, focusing on how foreshadowing and backstory enhance suspense.  During Reading, through the lens of White Fang, students explored how descriptive settings can serve as clues to foreshadow significant plot developments.

They discussed:

What impact does foreshadowing have on the reader? What effect does a backstory have on the reader? How are foreshadowing and backstory interconnected? What similarities exist between the two?

Students applied these concepts by planning and writing their own short stories, skilfully incorporating foreshadowing and developing credible backstories to engage their readers.

Biome Inquiry Project Exhibition

In addition to their narrative endeavours, students have been collaborating on an exciting Biome Inquiry Project. Working in pairs, they designed new animals with specific adaptations suitable for a chosen biome, such as Forest, Grasslands, Tundra, Desert, Fresh Water, Marine, or Wetlands. To complete this task, students researched their biome’s environment, including climate, flora, and terrain. Explored the animal food web to understand dietary connections within their biome. Identified survival needs such as food, water, shelter, and climate requirements. Designed a new animal with at least three adaptations to thrive in their selected biome. Presented their work in a museum-style exhibition.

Their animal design required research to create animals featuring physical and behavioural adaptations tailored for survival. They also made a museum exhibit label including an informative display label, with important information like: Identification (common name, scientific name, and animal family), Diet (food sources and methods of obtaining them), and Life & Behaviour (movement, defence, reproduction, and survival strategies)

The culmination of this project was a successful Biome Inquiry Project exhibition, where Level 5 and 6 students presented their projects to an enthusiastic audience of parents and classmates from the entire school community. The students are proud of the creativity and collaborative nature of all of their work. Their hard work is clearly evident. Keep up the fantastic work, everyone!

We wish everyone a safe and happy Term 3 break! We are looking forward to welcoming the students back for their final term of Primary School on October 6th!
