What's happening in our classroom?

Literacy

This term we will be exploring a non-fiction unit of learning in Literacy titled, Into the Unknown. This unit of learning will focus on Australian History and more specifically, early explorers. We will be learning about what motivated people to explore and who some of the important explorers were. Students will learn about the importance of trade during this time period and the settlement of Australia as a penal colony.

In Writing, students have been learning about the structure and features of information report writing. They have been learning about the structure of an introduction, body paragraph and conclusion. Students have completed their draft after researching their chosen animals and now are working on publishing their information reports.

Numeracy

Over the coming weeks students will be learning about Fractions. This will involve identifying equivalent fractions for halves, quarters and eighths. Students will show equivalent fractions using number lines, a bar model and shapes. They will practice locating fractions on a number line and any equivalent fractions.

As part of our maths learning students will continue to explore the topic of location. This will involve students learning about the features of a map such as a legend, scale and orientation (North, South, East and West). Students will have the chance to create their own island map, locate specifics on the map using a grid reference system and include features such as a legend, scale and title.

    Inquiry

This term our Inquiry unit is called, Types of Forces. This unit will involve students learning about different types of forces and how they are exerted.

Some essential questions from this unit include:

  • What are some samples of forces?

  • How can we harness the power of the wind?

  • What is friction and how is it used in everyday objects?

  • What is magnetism and how is it used in everyday objects?

Well-being

This term students will be working on the following topics in our Wellbeing learning:

  • Positive Coping Strategies

  • Problem Solving

  • Personal & Cultural Strengths

Celebration of Learning

3/4 Hooptime

We would like to extend a MASSIVE thankyou to the parents who volunteered and assisted for Hoop Time. Another MASSIVE shoutout to Ms French, Mr Jackson, Rachel and Nurse Belinda who attended also! The students represented our school with integrity and we are very VERY proud of them.

Creating a Wobbly Woodpecker Toy

This week we spent Tuesday afternoon with the Year 1 students creating a Wobbly Woodpecker toy. This activity was part of our Inquiry learning and was an example of how gravity and friction can effect the motion of an object. Our Year 4s had a great time teaching the younger students about force and creating the toy together.
