The Importance of Regular School Attendance

At Skye Primary School, we know that regular attendance is key to helping your child thrive, not just academically, but socially and emotionally too. When students attend school every day, they stay connected to their learning, build stronger friendships, and feel a greater sense of belonging in the classroom.

We understand that illness and unexpected events can happen, and we appreciate families keeping us informed. If your child is absent, please record the reason via Sentral or contact the office at skye.ps@education.vic.gov.au.

If you have any concerns about your child’s attendance or if there’s anything we can do to support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher. Working together helps ensure every student has the best chance to succeed.

A quick recap of our learning from this term...

Literacy

In Phonics we...

  • Finished reviewing Stage 7.4, working to embed all the alternative long vowel sounds such as 'o' as /o/ and /ow/; 'u' as /u/ and /oo/; as well as alternative ways of writing 's' such as /se/ and /ce/, including the relevant spelling rules.
  • Looked into the prefixes 'un-', 're'-, 'pre-', and suffixes '-ing', '-s', '-es', '-er', '-ed'. We developed our understanding of how these elements change the meaning of base words.

In Reading, as well as our class novel, 'The BFG', we read 'The Stone Lion', where we explored narrative structures and character traits such as selfish and selfless. This was followed by an Indigenous story, 'Walking in Gagudju Country', in which we looked at how non-fiction texts can be written in the style of fiction. We explored how the Indigenous culture was represented and how this allowed us to learn more about their history and way of life.

Numeracy

In Maths we...

  • Developed our skills in solving two-digit addition and subtraction problems, using a range of strategies that involved partitioning into tens and ones, fact families, doubles and near-doubles.
  • Students expanded their operational knowledge to include multiplicative thinking. We explored multiplication and division through concepts such as doubling, halving, arrays, repeated addition and subtraction before moving into skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s.
  • Other mathematical concepts we explored included location and directional language through maps and instructions, along with mass and capacity, where students predicted, measured and compared items using consistent informal units.

Inquiry - Use of Earth's Resources

Students have learnt about the importance of water, energy and soil, three of Earth's most important resources. They considered how they use water, where water comes from, and how we can conserve it. Students investigated ways to conserve energy and loved the opportunity to become soil detectives, examining different soil samples around the school.

Wellbeing

For the remainder of this term students will be learning the following from our Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships curriculum.

  • Learning about respect from Aboriginal perspectives:

Students will describe ways people can show respect for themselves, for people and for Country.

  • Knowing and showing respect:

Students will show what they think respect looks like or sounds like in different situations.

Students will describe what it looks or sounds like when someone treats others with respect.

Students will list some of the strengths that can help people to show respect.

  • Respecting and valuing difference:

This lesson will be touching on family differences and gender identities such as transgender and non binary. Please see the lesson below, if you have any questions please contact us.

A Celebration of Learning

Our Grade 2 students took their learning outdoors, using natural materials to create arrays and explore maths concepts hands on! They also had fun investigating the capacity of different containers by scooping sand to compare which holds more or less.

Wellbeing Open Afternoon

Thank you to all the parents and grandparents who joined us for our  Wellbeing Open Afternoon, where we explored emotional awareness and regulation through engaging Pixar clips. It was wonderful to see families actively tracking and discussing the characters' emotions using the Zone’s Rollercoaster Map.
