Connect: Year 1

End of Term 3!!

Hello families and friends.

Can you believe we are here at the end of Term 3? As teachers we have been reflecting on how much growth the kids have made since the beginning of Grade 1. We are sure that you have also noticed this at home. We encourage you to read lots of fun books as a family over the holidays and take the time to recharge for Term 4.

 LITTLE LEARNERS

Over the past week, we explored our new Stage 7.4 sounds including our split vowel diagraph /e-e/ + /e/ as in 'delete' and 'she, me, he'.

Then next week we are identifying the /o-e/ as in 'best nose, /o/ 'as in pony'+ /oe/ as in 'Seth's bad toe'. We will also be working on these sounds in the first week of Term 4.

WRITING:

The Grade 1 students are enjoying our mentor text Jetty Jumping. Students have been sharing their own experiences of visiting a Jetty and discussing all the amazing things we can spot in the ocean. We have been looking at different and interesting vocabulary that we notice in the story. Students can orally use these new words to help construct clear sentences. We have been looking at connections, words that connect our sentences to each other, eg- First, Then, Next and Finally. Students have also been planning and creating their own story and looking at how when we change characters, settings and events our whole story changes.

NUMERACY:

This week students will continue to develop their understanding of our sharing and grouping unit. The unit focuses on developing a deep understanding of sharing, grouping, finding halves, and employing skip counting strategies - a crucial foundation for multiplication and division. We are learning how to make multiple groups of the same number and students are learning to arrange these groups into arrays.

INQUIRY:

The Grade 1 students will continue to explore the fascinating world of minibeasts! We have been learning so much that I am sure your children would love to share some amazing facts about their favourite minibeasts. The stick insects are keeping our students entertained.

Dojo Awards:

Congratulations to the following students for earning 150 Dojo points and earning their silver awards! The following student names will be read out during this week's assembly. Hope to see you there!
