Japanese

It has been a busy term for Japanese students at Mater Dei. Early in the term, we had eight students and two staff from Nishiawakura, Japan visit us and stay with families for a week. As well as attending classes at the College, the Japanese students, along with their host students from Years 8 and 9, participated in a variety of other activities together, including a Behind the Scenes Tour of the zoo at the Botanic Gardens, a Frisbee Golf Lesson with Mr Cartwright, Anzac biscuit making with Ms Lane, Boomerang making and decorating with Mr Geurtsen and Ms Keough, and an Aboriginal Dancing Workshop to finish off the week. Thank you to all of our host families for their kindness and hospitality in hosting a student.

In classes, Year 8 have been learning about Japanese food and can now recognise and confidently order food in a Japanese restaurant. They tasted some of Japan’s famous underlying flavours and tried their hand at making onigiri (rice balls).

Year 9 have focused on expanding their knowledge of days, dates and verbs, in order to make plans and invite friends to do different things. They have been building their confidence in speaking throughout the term.

Year 10 students are nearing the end of their Elective Japanese studies, and were challenged to promote Wagga and its surrounding areas for their assessment task this term. In doing so, the students learned not only a variety of new Japanese grammar structures, but also about some of the activities available to them in our great region!
