STAGE 2 NEWS

Wow, what a busy, exciting and amazing couple of weeks Stage 2 have had.  Here is just a snippet of what we have been up to.

Week 6 was all about ‘The Evening with ACOS’.  After a week of practising and perfecting, the children performed on the Armidale Secondary College stage - and boy did they perform!!  Mrs Townsend just could not believe how far they had come as dancers and was incredibly proud of their achievement.  We honestly could not have presented such a visually spectacular performance without the assistance of our parents.  We would like to extend a HUGE thank you  to our parent body who applied the correct makeup and ensured that their children were in the appropriate costume.  We simply could not have done it without your support!

During maths for the past couple of weeks we have been focusing on volume with many hands-on activities.  The students have estimated and then measured the capacity of a variety of containers using water.  The students also measured the volume of various boxes using a limited number of 1cm cubes. This activity required a lot of team work as well as using their maths skills to develop an efficient strategy for measuring the volume of a large object.

In writing, we have started gathering our ideas on the topic ‘Bushfires are the worst natural disaster’.  Interestingly enough, after our whole stage brainstormed ideas for and against this topic, many children decided that they wanted to disagree with this topic. We realised how many other serious natural disasters there are around the world which you can see in the picture underneath.  The deep thinking and articulate contributions during our discussions has been impressive.  We are looking forward to reading their persuasive arguments!

Through much patience and perseverance the students have managed to grow a variety of edible plants from seed.  These seedlings are now ready to be placed into our Aeroponics Tower which the students set up last week.  Each week now the students need to monitor and maintain the Tower by testing the pH level of the water and ensuring there is enough nutrients within the water to ensure the plants continue to grow and thrive.  Talon’s Dragon Bean seedling for example has on average been growing about 3cm per day!!!!!

To complete our ‘Fire’ unit of work the students used water colours and fine-tip black markers to create original and dramatic bushfire scenes.  The photos speak for themselves!

Wishing everyone a safe and relaxing holiday when they arrive in a couple of weeks,

Jane Townsend and Karen Dunham
