Maori Language Week, Te wiki o te reo Maori. (14 – 20 September.)
Theme for this year is ake, ake, ake, forever language.
During a lunchtime activity, we learnt a little about the history and significance of the poi, in the Maori culture. The poi (paw-ee) is a traditional Maori object made of soft balls on strings and swung in rhythm to music. Long ago, the Maori people used a poi to improve hand strength and coordination, which helped them with their weaving and hunting. Today the poi is mostly used for storytelling, dance and performances, helping to keep the Maori culture and te reo Maori alive.
