Chess

The last two weeks of school saw the McCarthy Chess Club travel to play against multiple schools and host the Farrer Chess team at home.

On Wednesday 26th June, our players travelled to Armidale to play against the Armidale Secondary College, O’Connor Catholic College and New England Girls School (NEGS). This was part of the Armidale Invitational Games, which occur in term 2 and 3 each year. The games were of high quality and our students played extremely well - a welcome opportunity for our developing players to gain valuable experience. All players had a great time and had a chance to talk with students from other schools. I would like to thank Mr Warwick and NEGS for hosting the event.

On Monday 1st July, Farrer's chess team visited the school to play a number of games against the McCarthy players. These games have become a vital part of the chess activities for both schools - developing playing skills for a number of our younger players taking part. Each term the aim is to have two sessions of games, with each school hosting a session each.

At the start of next term, the McCarthy Chess representatives will play the final against Aurora College in the first division of the North West Region for the NSW Country Schools Knockout Chess ompetition. This is the furthest that the McCarthy Catholic College Chess Club ever has progressed in this competition.

Interesting Chess Fact:

In a single game of chess, there are 400 possible moves after each move played.
