Career opportunities and information continues to be available for McCarthy students.
University application and early entry deadlines in August and September
This term is the deadline for many early entry applications and applications to universities either by direct means or through UAC (Universities Admission Centre), which coordinates applications for most universities in NSW and the ACT plus interstate institutions via VTAC, QTAC etc.
Some early entry schemes to various universities have already closed. A list of all universities and pathways to apply to them either by ATAR or via early entry schemes was sent to all Year 12 during Week 3.
Information on specific schemes and scholarships continues to be shared with students via our Universities & UAC Google Classroom. UAC provides this checklist for Year 12 students.
UAC key dates for applications this term are as follows:
16 September 2024: SRS: Applications close for 2024. Apply for the Schools Recommendation Scheme (which covers many university early entry schemes) by 11.59pm. You must first complete a UAC application for undergraduate admission.
30 September 2024: Undergraduate (domestic and international students): Early bird fee deadline.To avoid higher processing charges, complete, pay and submit your application by 11.59pm.
University Open Days
Many are held during August and September. Dates have previously been shared with students. UAC provides this list of dates. Year 11 students and their parents are advised to consider visiting these while in Year 11 before the hectic Term 3 in the HSC year.
NSW Police Expo
On Friday 5th July 2024, Four students from Years 10-12 attended the NSW Police Expo at Tamworth Sports Dome. The Expo showcased a range of NSW Police Force Career pathways including:
- The Dog Unit
- Forensics
- Rural Crime Prevention
- Tactical Operations
- Traffic and Highway Patrol.
Throughout the day the students had the opportunity to meet with officers from recruitment and the various specialist units and gain an insight into the recruitment process and what it would be like to be a serving officer in the NSW Police Force.
You Should be a Cop | 4 Day Schools Program
With the success of the Expo, NSW Police will be hosting a 4 day program from Tuesday 3rd September to Friday 6th September 2024 where students will learn about the application process, participate in fitness testing and interact with police and specialist policing units.
RIEP Flash Starts Program | Term 3 and 4
Belmore Engineering is offering secondary students (Years 10-12) the opportunity to gain first hand experience in the metal fabrication industry. Students will learn what it is like to work in a live work environment, learn new skills, develop an understanding of the industry and build employment connections. Students will also make a small project - a fire pit. Places are limited, students are advised to express their interest to Miss Burke.
RIEP Welding Skills | 6 Week Program Term 3
TAFE NSW and Obieco are offering Year 10-12 students the opportunity to participate in a 6 week welding skills program (7 day program in total) where they will be introduced to all aspects of the Engineering Sector, including developing practical skills in engineering, general construction, metal fabrication, auto electrical and welding. Students are encouraged to seek more information and express their interest in this program to Miss Burke.
Apprentice and Trainee Opportunities for 2025
We have recently received information on Apprentice and Trainee Programs on offer to students for 2025.

Year 10 Work Experience Opportunities
Tamworth Hospital Allied Health Work Experience
Tamworth Allied Health will again run their Year 10 work experience program at Tamworth Referral Hospital during Term 3 and 4. The program offers Year 10 students an opportunity to explore different allied health careers within NSW Health to see what truly sparks interest. Over 3 days students will dive into the world of allied health and gain invaluable insights into the roles and responsibilities of allied health professionals. For more information please click here. - Term 3 | 4th - 6th September 2024 (Applications open until Friday 16th August 2024).
- Term 4 | 6th - 8th November 2024
A Reminder for students to check their school emails
Students are reminded to check their emails daily. The Transition Team will submit numerous Expression of Interests (EOI) for training, professional learning and/or fantastic events. Recently a student survey was sent asking students in Years 10 - 12 to submit an EOI regarding white card training for mid to late November. If you haven’t done so already, please complete the survey.
