Warraymayalaya Maal Dhuwi Retreat

During Term 2, our Year 8 and 9 students journeyed to Gumbaynggirr Country for the 2024 Warraymayalaya Maal Dhuwi Retreat. This week-long experience was designed to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal Spirituality and Identity, fostering a stronger sense of belonging and connection.

During the retreat, students engaged with Gumbaynggirr elders and explored bush tucker, creation stories, language, and dance. Highlights included dancing on the Gumgali Track, participating in spirituality and identity workshops, team-building activities, a Commando Run, and a lively campfire karaoke session. The retreat proved to be a transformative experience, enriching students' connections to Aboriginal culture.

NAIDOC Celebrations

It was fantastic to see our staff, students, and MCC community coming together for NAIDOC Week. A special congratulations to Grace Shanley, Lilly Dow, and Jessie Refalo for their stunning debut at the NAIDOC Debutante Ball 2024.

McCarthy Catholic College celebrated NAIDOC Week with a series of meaningful activities honoring Aboriginal Culture and Traditions. The week began with our College assembly and continued each morning with mentor group teachers leading Acknowledgements of Country and discussions on the significance of traditional Smoking Ceremonies. Students from Years 7-10 participated in religion lessons and activities centered around the NAIDOC 2024 theme, "Keep the Fire Burning, Blak Loud & Proud."

Our celebrations included flag-raising ceremonies by House Leaders, a special NAIDOC assembly reflecting on Aboriginal Identity and community, and performances by cultural dancers in the Yurrandaali Room. Students engaged in collaborative art projects and Journey Stone painting, contributing to a vibrant display of cultural activities. The week concluded with a whole-school sausage sizzle, the cutting of the NAIDOC cake, and a spirited NAIDOC Interhouse Competition, ensuring active participation from all students.

Congratulations to our NAIDOC award winners: Zeb Allan, Armani Ramirez, Olivia Phelps, Jacob Allen, Keely Nash, Isla Woods, Isabelle Willis, Indiana Brazier, Hannah Wakely, Lilly Dow, Baylee Whitworth, Eve Cloake, and Layla Dobson. Special recognition goes to Ethan Allan for the Perpetual NAIDOC Cultural Award 2024.
