Student Achievements
Students As Authors Writing Competition
Each year Armidale Catholic School students are invited to enter a writing competition. This year, for the third year in a row, a McCarthy student has been awarded first place in the senior category. Congratulations to Hannah O'Toole in Year 12 who has won this year’s Students As Authors Writing Competition. The competition is always fierce and this year there were a total of 158 entries from across all schools in the Diocese.
Hannah now has the opportunity to work with local illustrator, Trish Donald, to develop her story into an eBook which will be published on SORA, our digital library app, where it can be borrowed and read by an audience of more than 250,000 students in 15 Catholic Dioceses across Australia. Once her story has been published we will make sure to let everyone know so that you can borrow it. Well done Hannah.
Democracy on the road
The Parliament of NSW celebrated the bicentenary of the NSW Legislative Assembly by visiting six regional centres across NSW and hosting a special outreach roadshow. On the 24th July, Year 11 student, Thomas Errington was part of the public speaking component and competed against highly accomplished speakers on the topic "Actions speak louder than words." Tom's speech highlighted how democracy has empowered people to lead and it was a great opportunity to see young people have a voice for what they are passionate about. That same evening, Lauren Barnes, Sasha Domingo and Charlette Lyon represented MCC at the NSW Parliament’s Youth Forum. Student leaders from across the region had open discussions on issues that concern them and offered their vision for a parliamentary democracy of the future. The maturity and insights our students offered were a testament to their investment in their local communities and futures. Well done to these students.
