Miss Flack
Foundation:
In Foundation this term, students will begin by revising their skills of Addition & Subtraction. We then begin to explore different units of measurement including length, mass and capacity. Students will have some fun linking the upcoming Olympics with some work around Data, where they will learn how interpret data to graph results. Finally, we will spend some time understanding the concept of sharing and grouping.
Each week, the students begin a Maths lesson with a Number Talk which is used to develop their computational fluency and conceptual understanding at the same time. Students will need to justify their answers, building on their problem solving and reasoning skills. In addition to this, we also do Daily Reviews which revisits previously learnt content, to aid with retention of knowledge.
1/2:
In Numeracy, students will explore the features of 2D and 3D shapes. They will understand number patterns through skip counting and use this knowledge to solve multiplication and division problems. They will identify and represent fractions and calculate durations of time, as well as begin to familiarise how to read analogue and digital clocks.
3/4:
During Numeracy, we will continue learning a variety of multiplication strategies before moving on with our unit on division. This term, students will learn about money and financial maths, making strong connections with our world. We will also be having a large focus on Measurement and Geometry, undertaking units on area, time and mass. Finally, we will revisit interpreting and creating data sets.
5/6:
In Maths this term, we will begin by exploring the measurement of angles, and how angles relate to 2D shapes and objects in the real world. We will revisit the four operations and talk about the correct order of performing multiple operations.
Later in the term we will look at digital, analogue, 12 and 24 hour clocks, and discover how to calculate ‘elapsed time’ problems. We will revisit fractions and continue to look at problem solving maths activities.
This is a reminder for any families who would like their students to participate in the upcoming AMC maths competition. Information is provided on the attached 'Expression of Interest' form. Please note: If students registered for the KSF Maths Competition earlier in the year, they are automatically registered for this one, and no further action is required. If students are signing up for this competition only, there will be an $8.50 charge, which will be applied via Compass once we know how many students we have participating.
Cut off dates for these forms is Friday 26th July. Unfortunately, no late entries will be allowed. For further information please contact Miss Flack or Mr Reiter at school.
