Japanese

It has been great to see the students back for Term 3, a time in Japan when there are many festivals to celebrate the stages of the warmer seasons.

Foundation:

Foundation students have been learning about various sections of Japan’s capital city, Tokyo. They have seen images and Japanese videos of the special crepe shops in Harajuku and the action and engagement of fans at Tokyo’s baseball dome. Students have applied this learning to draw their favourite images of these places.

Grade 1 and Grade 2:

Students are learning about the special clothing which Japanese people wear on special occasions, especially the kimono. Using actual dolls clothed in kimonos as models, students have drawn their own designs on kimonos and label each of the parts of these traditional costumes.

Grade 3 and Grade 4:

Students have been working at mastering the appropriate kanji for the days of the week and numbers to 100. They have also been shown how Japanese children are taught by their grandparents, the importance of sustainability and using resources frugally.

Grade 5 and 6:

In addition to reviewing the vocabulary and kanji for the days of the week and numbers to 100, students have been creating a travel brochure to inform and engage travellers with three Japanese holiday destinations of their choice. They are also planning a trip through the Japanese Rail Subway system, describing in Japanese their trip to an imaginary local Tokyoite.

Japanese Club (Japanese classroom, Tuesdays at 1.30pm).

Students have been engaged in a range of activities this term, including calligraphy, origami and kendama (a hand-ball skill activity).
