Level 6

Level  6

Maths

In recent maths sessions over the past fortnight, students have been deepening their understanding of fractions. They have enthusiastically engaged in hands-on problem-solving activities that showcase their skills in representing, comparing, and ordering fractions. Throughout this period, students have had opportunities to work both independently and collaboratively, which has greatly enriched their understanding. It has been delightful to observe students sharing insights and encouraging each other while exploring the concept of fractions.

Writing

Over the past two weeks in our writing sessions, students have been immersed in narrative writing with a focus on mystery themes. During week 2, students delved into exploring characters and their traits, learning how to use these insights to develop compelling story characters. Similarly, in week 3, students sharpened their skills in describing settings to create vivid mental images for their readers. Throughout these activities, students had opportunities to work both independently and collaboratively, deepening their comprehension of these concepts.

They also had the chance to review and analyse their peers' work, examining how characters and settings were developed and identifying areas for improvement. It has been delightful to witness the creativity of students shining through during these engaging lessons.

Reading

In week 2, students explored Australian Myths and Legends, focusing particularly on Dreamtime stories. They further developed their understanding of literary features that distinguish between fiction and nonfiction texts.

During week 3, the students shifted their focus to the Olympics. They researched the history of the Olympics and collaboratively summarised this information using online collaborative platforms. Additionally, they practiced making inferences by using less familiar Olympic events to draw conclusions about the sports involved, utilising digital tools for their exploration.

Inquiry

Throughout Inquiry Level 6 students have been looking at Australia and the geographic properties of Australia. Students completed a collaborative project as a class where they made a map of Australia as a classroom display. Students where able to explore natural and manmade landmarks, flags, flora and fauna, climate and other aspects of the states and territories.
