Level 3

Level  3

What another wonderful week in Level 3!

Reading

We began exploring cause and effect in our reading lessons this week - when one outcome causes another to happen. Cause is the why it happened, and Effect is what happened. As an example: Mrs Wridgway wrote on the board and the students copied the correct spelling down. (Because Mrs Wridgway wrote on the board, the effect was that students could copy the correct spelling of words). Of course, tricky Mr English can change the order around in a sentence with the effect first! As an example: Mrs Wridgway was very happy that lots of students brought their production t-shirt into school (Because lots of students brought their t-shirt in, the effect was Mrs Wridgway was happy).

Students have been working on identifying information relating to the cause and effect in a range of texts this week.

Writing

This week we have continued with our partner narrative writing. Together in small groups students have produced a planned outline for their story. We then developed some main character profiles so our descriptive writing helps readers to visualise what the characters look like and how they might move or behave. From here, students fleshed out their ideas for an interesting plot for the story that includes a rise in tension as the problem unfolds and a fall in tension as the problem is resolved. Students understand that by creating a complication (problem) for the characters, their story is beginning to take shape.

Homework / Inquiry

I have been blown away by the quality of everyone’s 2-minute presentations about an Australian state of their choice! We have had colourful detailed posters, personal items collected during holidays and an array of scripts and cue cards to assist with their public speaking. We are proud of those students who were unsure about speaking in front of the class, but faced their fears and showcased a wonderful effort 😊

Numeracy

Our focus in mathematics is moving from multiplication into division while exploring the link between them. We are working on using strategies that help us work effectively with the numbers we are exploring. It has been lovely to hear students using the language of multiplication and division – groups of, divided equally, factors, product, rows and columns when working with arrays. There has also been some exciting ‘a-ha’ moments which have certainly been confidence builders!
