Read Around the Rooms:

Reading Around the Rooms is one of the many special focuses we love at Western Heights. It's an opportunity to share favourite stories. I have many favourite stories that I love sharing with children.

One such favourite is a book called 'Way Home' by Libby Hathorn.

"It's night and the dark is filled with strange sounds as Shane makes his way home. On a fence he finds a stray cat that at first growls and spits at him. But Shane talks and strokes the kitten to calmness, and decides to take the 'Spitfire, Kitten Number One,' home with him. No gang of boys, avenue of dense traffic, or fierce dog can stop Shane from carrying his newfound friend to the place he calls home. Greg Rogers' sensitive use of charcoal and pastel creates Shane and his cat in stunning city-at-night time scenes."

A few times a year, our school has a big teacher scramble. For one week, straight after lunch for 15 minutes, our teachers go into different classes to read to other students around the school. It's a lot of fun for us all to be in one another's classrooms and share reading the books we love. It promotes community and helps us all get to know each other better.
