Body Bright Program

Miss Solly - 6A Classroom Teacher

The Butterfly Body Bright program is in full swing in our wellbeing classes from Prep to Year 6. Our students have been engaged in age appropriate, strength based activities to promote healthy attitudes and behaviours towards the body, eating and physical activity.

Butterfly Body Bright has 6 themes - Brave, Resilient, Inclusive, Grateful, Happy and Thoughtful. Each theme targets an important factor that contributes to the development of children's body image. The first theme is Brave against appearance based teasing.

Research shows that receiving negative comments about appearance can have serious consequences on a child’s body image and self esteem. It can also increase their risk of experiencing disordered eating and eating disorders.

Butterfly Body Bright helps children to be Brave in their bodies, by empowering them to stand up for their own bodies and for others. It’s never OK to tease or make negative comments about another person’s appearance.

Within the lessons, the students have created a class promise to be Body Bright. This includes brainstorming how to promote positive peer interactions and build courage to stand up against appearance related teasing.

What can you do at home?

Adopt a zero tolerance approach to appearance based teasing or bullying. Challenge and call out language, comments, teasing and nicknames that are appearance based.
