RoboCup Competition

The RoboCup Junior competitions are kicking off this term. The Melbourne Metropolitan Regional event occurred on Saturday, July 27. The student focus at regional events is very much about learning, testing out their robots, being inspired by what other students have done and sharing ideas. Even so, it is always nice to take home a medal.

Glen Eira College entered three teams in three different divisions. In Rescue Line, the aim is for robots to “autonomously traverse through the wreckage of a city devastated by a natural disaster to rescue a trapped victim” by following a black line up and down inclines, over and around obstacles, through doorways to get to the victim. In the Secondary Rescue division, Isaac took home the gold medal, coming first out of 34 teams. In Riley Rover Rescue, Jesse’s robot performed well. Even though he didn’t win a medal, he is bringing home lots of ideas about what he can do to improve his robot before the next competition.

Robot Soccer is a two-on-two competition between autonomous robots. The team of Marko, Arthur and Sullivan competed in the Standard League division. They were the only entry in that division, which means they competed against robots in the Simple Simon Soccer division in demonstration games. For their effort they did bring home gold medals, but more importantly they provided inspiration to the primary age students when they saw what was possible.

We are now looking forward to the Victorian state competition in September where we are looking to having a few more teams entered across a few more divisions.
