Grade Six

What a fantastic start we have had in Grade 6, coming back to Term 3 ready to jump straight in. Students returned from their holidays energised and eager, sharing stories about their exciting adventures and relaxing breaks. They captured the essence of their holidays in wonderful highlight snapshots, showcasing their creativity and writing skills.

This term, students are learning about all things science reports, with students conducting in-class experiments that have sparked some interesting conversations and theories. In Mathematics, our focus is on measurement and students are gearing up for a fun-filled day participating in the Wacky Olympics, where they will engage in various activities as a part of our unit. We also have the Oatlands "Oatlympics" Celebration Day this week, where students have put tremendous effort into making flags that represent their chosen country. We are looking forward to seeing everyone dressed up and participating in some fun Oatlympics activities.

Additionally, our classes are working hard reading their good fit books as part of the Premier's Reading Challenge, which is progressing well and will conclude towards the end of the term. This challenge has been a fantastic opportunity for students to discover new books and authors, while enhancing their reading skills.

Manasvi from 6JS received an encouragement award in the 2024 Fresh Words Competition through The City of Casey. She wrote a creative writing piece titled "The Hot Food Family". Please enjoy her story below.

The Hot Food Family

In the bustling city of New York, there lies a BIG wooden oven. In this oven, lives the Hot Food Family home to Pizza, French Fry, Soup and Tofu. Today is a busy night, they all have to put on their best toppings because a VIP guest is coming to the restaurant and they really want to please him so they can upgrade to another new flavour! They were very excited, Pizza was piling pepperoni on himself, French Fry was spraying sauce, Soup was trying cracking an egg to put on him, and Tofu was putting red hot pepper. The chefs were boiling them in the pans and pots and once they were done, they put them aside and went to greet the guest. When the chefs gave the food to the VIP customer, he loved it and posted an AMAZING review online! That night, people were lined up outside the restaurant doors, and the hot food family couldn’t be prouder.

Later that night, they heard noises in the kitchen. Nobody was working the night shift today so they got super scared. Pizza was brave enough to venture out, but as soon as he stepped out the door, everybody followed. No way they were losing pizza, he was more popular than SUSHI! They all ventured out until Soup signalled that he heard something near the fridge. They all stared at the fridge- the tall, towering fridge. Tofu was speechless by the sight, and got knocked out and bumped into Soup. Just then somebody opened the door, it was a tub of white creamy stuff inside and it was labelled YOGHURT in big blue letters. “Who’s there?’ boomed a voice. Pizza stepped forward and spoke confidently, “It’s the Hot Food Family, sir.” Yoghurt rolled his eyes, “Oh, it’s you, the ones who take all the attention of the customers and make their mouths water. Well, I never!” French Fry asked, “Where’s the rest of your group?” Just then, a flat pinkish/reddish sort of figure appeared. “Salmon”. Then, appeared a white bottle “Milk”. Lastly, a heavy bag which was green and looked like ice came forward- “And Frozen Peas,” he panted. The Hot Food Family stood in silence as the cold food sat on the bench, enjoying themselves with the heater. Pizza said, “You can become hot, you know, and become a member of our family.” He put an elbow on Tofu but pulled away after. Just then, a loud bang sounded. Yogurt turned. Then, he looked around for the family, but they were nowhere to be seen

Next morning, when Pizza woke up, he felt he was lying down on ice! He was freezing, and when Tofu, Soup and French Fry woke up, they were freezing as well! But they were shocked to see all the cold foods armed near the oven! Tofu said, “We need to become hot again! Nobody will like us like this!” They all ran out the door towards the oven and were about to open it when, “Nah, what do you think you are doing?” It was Yogurt, with a wicked smirk on his face. Of course! Pizza was infuriated! He slapped yogurt and all the yogurt poured onto Soup. “Not on me!” Soup yelled. Just then, the chefs came to get the Hot Foods for lunch, and took them to each table, just like they imagined, and the guests weren’t very happy! 

They sadly went back to the oven, as the chef was serving the cold foods now. Yogurt was so pleased, while the Hot Food Family were devastated, their lives were doomed. But after a few weeks, they were back in the oven because the chefs put cold foods back in the fridge. A few days passed, and the restaurant got a call for an order. What foods do you think got ordered?

We are all looking forward to a wonderful Term 3, with many exciting things ahead.
