Principal Report
Oatlands from My Point of View
Matthew Kenny – Assistant Principal
We are past the halfway mark of the 2024 school year and looking forward to the opportunities to learn and grow in Semester 2. This time of the school year provides a great checkpoint for everyone to assess our progress and re-establish our focus for the next 6 months. All our key indicators around student learning and wellbeing have been very positive and we believe we are well placed overall to complete a successful 2024.
Road Safety
It has been brought to our attention that some members of our community have not held road safety and student safety as their number one priority during drop off and pick up times, especially around our school crossings. Unfortunately, we have had some reports of drivers failing to stop when our crossing supervisors are already on the road. It is extremely important that our crossing supervisors’ instructions are following by all to ensure that our families have a safe place to cross the busy Kurrajong Rd. We would also like to encourage all families to utilise the school crossings during drop off and pick up times, even if it adds a couple of minutes to the time it takes you to get home. It is important to role-model road safety for our children and an easy way to do this is to use the school crossings when they are active.
Courtesy in our Community
We understand that traffic and parking around our school, especially at pick up times, can be congested and difficult. As a result, some families arrive very early for pick up, parking out the front of our neighbours’ houses for lengthy periods of time. At times some families have opted to park close to, or even partially obstruct, some of our neighbours’ driveways. We feel that these options are unreasonable and unacceptable, and we would like to strongly encourage the members of our community to be courteous of those who live in close proximity of our school.
Oatlympics
On Tuesday 23rd July, we held our Oatlympics event. It was fantastic to see our student’s dressed in the colours of their nominated country at our opening ceremony. Each grade of athletes paraded around the whole student group, displaying flags and other items they had made in class. Throughout the day, every student had the opportunity to participate in a variety of events including, hurdles, soccer, vortex throw, teamwork activities and the giant parachute (which was a student favourite). Thanks must go to our PE Team, Kara Ellis, Martine Carmichael and Sarah James for organising and running the event. Thanks also to all the teachers who assisted throughout the day and a big congratulations to all our students for participating so wonderfully.
Parent Teacher & Student Focused Meetings
This week we have held our Parent Teacher & Student Focused meetings. These meetings provide an excellent opportunity for families to discuss their child’s progress and set goals for Semester 2. If you have not made a time to meet your child’s teacher, it is not too late so please make contact and arrange a suitable time.
