From the Principal

We have nearly made it; the end of the term is only one school day away. Lots of parents have mentioned it has been a long term; I know all of our staff are definitely ready for a well-deserved break. As mentioned last week, our NAPLAN results were simply outstanding. We are waiting for parents to receive their child's results before sharing our official results. However, our reading and writing results will be comparable with some of the best schools in the state. Individual student results are due to be released in early Term 3. This is a tremendous result and shows that all the hard work we have undertaken as a teaching team over the last four years produces high-end results.

At our assembly on Monday, I shared with the students and parents who were in attendance that, unfortunately, one of the chickens we had been caring for had died. The chicken became unwell last week, and despite efforts from staff and students, nothing could have been done to help. Having pets or school animals provides students a wonderful opportunity to increase responsibility and help to reduce anxiety. Unfortunately, this is a sad part of the journey. I thank the staff (particularly Mrs. Glenn and Mrs. Hiosan) who cared for our little friend.

Last Friday was an amazing day, it started with Mass in the morning which was well attended by parents and parishioners. Students then experienced Thommies Market, this was a fantastic experience with students and staff having a wonderful time exploring the various student lead stalls. There are lots of photos of the day in the Thommies Market tab of the newsletter. I suggest you head over and check it out!!

I am very proud of the students and staff at the school for their hard work and dedication over this very long term. I wish each and every one of them a restful break and look forward to our return to school on Monday, July 15th.

New Student:

Next term we welcome Leo to St Thomas More. He will join our 2/3 class. We are very excited to have Leo and his family join our wonderful community.

Study Tours:

In some exciting news we will have a few students who will be joining us on a study tour all the way from China. These students will join our classes and everyday school life for a period of four weeks. We welcome them to our school and hope they enjoy their time as part of our community.

Parent / Teacher conversations:

Early this week a link was shared with families to book in for a Parent / Teacher conversation early in Term 3. The dates for the conversations are Monday, July 22 and Tuesday, July 23. We kindly ask that families who engage in termly PSG meetings with school staff refrain from booking in for a Parent / Teacher conversation as these types of meetings already happen each term for you and your child/ren. I have also provided the link here for any family that missed the original SchoolStream.

4/5/6 Excursion to Chadstone:

What better way to finish the term than with an excursion!! Tomorrow our Year 4/5/6 students are heading to Chadstone for a day of fun and learning. They will explore the world of Coding at the Apple store and then they will let their hair down with some fun LegoLand. We hope they have a fantastic day. I can't wait to hear all about it.

STM Learning Expo:

I am so excited to share this event with families. Please make a note in your diary for Thursday 1st of August. This inaugural event will showcase some of the wonderful learning that happens at our school. All families are welcome, the event will begin in the school hall at 6:30 pm in the evening. It is sure to be a spectacular event.

NAIDOC Week info:

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. You can support and get to know your local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities through activities and events held across the country.

As this lands in the winter school holidays, we have organised three workshops with Emmy Webbers, a local indigenous Artist, in the first week of Term 3.

These workshops will be the exciting starting point for our new whole-school art project

In collaboration with the students, staff and the wider community Emmy will formulate ideas and themes for creating several art pieces that will eventually be created in our school environment. This is a very exciting project to be a part of and we look forward to this taking shape.
