Children Rights and Problem Solving

By Glen Sacred Heart Educational Team

During group time at Glen Sacred Heart Kindergarten, we facilitated discussions after reading a book about the solar system. This encouraged the children to share their ideas and listen to one another. We noticed that some children were particularly engaged in sharing their views, so we guided them to our problem-solving visual board to help them engage in respectful conversations and express their rights within the group.

Show and tell

Rian shared his beautiful Indian flag artwork and discussing the history of Indian Independence Day. The concept of independence became a key point of group discussion, sparking curiosity among the children about what it means to be independent as a “child”.

The word "independently" is key for children to express the skills they can do by themselves, such as tying their shoelaces or brushing their hair.  Children's achievements are recognised, and they feel proud of themselves. We took notes on key points and quotes from the children, such as their rights to learn, play and be safe and learn to be independent as they grow.

As part of Science Week, we invited our local Bunnings community to demonstrate gardening processes, teaching the children how to grow and care for plants. This emphasised that caring for our environment is also caring for our planet Earth. We offered several science experiments to expand our solar system program, including volcano experiments and color mixing activities to compare the colours of different planets and conduct simple experiments to demonstrate concepts like gravity.

The children were provided with time to explore and develop their understanding at their own pace through hands-on experiments. For example when Fletcher and Lulu were mixing the primary colors, they made a brown colour that was used to color the planet Mars.
