Amazing 5/6
What have we been up to?
Welcome to Term 3 and what a busy term it will be. The big feature events this term are the school camp in week 8 (2/9- 6/9) and the Market Day (30/8). The lead up to these are going to be full of preparation, nerves, packing, production and hard work. The preparation for the Market Day in particular will run all term, with students in charge of the creation, production and marketing of their very own products or at least for the collection and creation of their stands. This day is a huge fundraiser for a number of things around the school, including graduation for our Year 6’s. Please check Compass in the next few weeks for more information on this. Also please stay across Compass for further camp information, such as packing lists, that will be sent as well.
Other events this term include the Basketball Gala, on the 5th of August, for those kids who volunteered to play basketball, House Athletics in week 6 and District Athletics in week 9. We also have the Whole School Concert in Week 9 as well, with the kid’s costumes being jeans and a t-shirt with a positive message, symbol or emoji on it. We might even be able to squeeze in some teaching this term as well!
Student Report:
Hi my name is Kai and I’m a leader in sport.
Hi my name is Jaxon and I’m a leader in gaming and sport.
This week in 5/6, in maths groups we have been learning about mixed fractions, decimals and improper fractions. A mixed fraction is a fraction with a combination of whole numbers and fractions, and an improper fraction has a higher numerator than denominator.
This week in 5/6 in literacy we have been learning about poetry. The types of poems we have looked at are free verse poems, which is a poem which has no structure or requirements. We analysed a free verse poem called The Shortest Day.
This week in inquiry we have been learning about supply and demand to help us organise our projects and prices for our upcoming market stalls.
We have learnt why some things are more expensive than others; like a gaming console is more expensive than a piece of fruit, because the materials are more expensive and more rare.
Thank you for listening, and have a great weekend.
Term 3 learning:
Morpheme Magic:
Morpheme Magic will continue this term, focusing still on the Prefixes, Suffixes and Bases that help improve the maturity and complexity of their writing.
Literacy:
We will be shifting into the creative forms of poetry, with a number of author and style studies as well as plenty of opportunities to create and write their own.
Maths:
In Maths, the students will focus on how and why we use fractions, decimals and percentages, and how these can be used to calculate the values of whole numbers or how stores use these to put items on sale.
