Wasilly Kandinsky

This term the Grade 3 and 4 have been focusing on textiles and are making art with wool. They have learned a new technique called ‘dry’ or ‘needle’ felting which is the process of pushing combed wool into felt using a barbed needle. The needle has tiny little hooks in it that hook the wool into the felt so it stays in place. 

 

The inspiration for their artwork was artist Wassily Kandinsky, one of the founding fathers of Abstract art. He believed that shapes and colours alone could be art, and was especially interested in the relationship between colour, shapes and emotions. He thought the triangle would cause aggressive feelings, the square calm feelings, and the circle spiritual feelings. Here are some Kandinsky inspired dry felting artworks from the students:
