Year 3 Celebration Newsletter
Reading:
In Reading, this semester students studied the novel ‘Yirra and her Deadly Dog, Demon’- they covered comprehension strategies such as predicting, inferring, and summarising.
Students learnt to identify the main idea in fiction and nonfiction texts and distinguished the difference between the ‘topic’ and the ‘main idea’. Students learnt to understand the importance of visualising as they read and how it can assist them to comprehend the text.
Writing:
In writing, the Grade 3s looked at the following text types through their novel study of ‘Yirra and her Deadly Dog, Demon’:
Persuasive: Students explored the aspects of persuasive texts, beginning with the text structure, looking into reasoning, exploring modality and persuasive devices. Students applied their understanding of the structure to craft their own persuasive text. | Poetry: Students learnt how to use poetic devices in our writing to create short poems.

Mathematics:
In Mathematics, students have focused on Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Statistics and Probability. In Number, we explored Additive Thinking, by looking into adding and subtracting two and three digit numbers. In Measurement, students delved into formal and informal units to measure objects. Lastly, in Statistics, we learnt how to gather data and produce a range of graphs using both materialistic resources and digital technology.
Wellbeing:
In Wellbeing, we continued The Resilience Project, a program aimed at nurturing resilience in our students. Through interactive activities like discussions, journaling, and mindfulness exercises, students explored gratitude, empathy, and emotional literacy, they learnt to navigate challenges with courage and optimism. By fostering resilience, we empowered our students to thrive academically, socially, and personally.
Inquiry:
In Inquiry, students delved into the Earth’s relationship with the Sun and how the Sun, Earth and Moon interact. They learnt that the rotation of the Earth on its axis causes regular changes, including night and day and the pattern of the seasons. Students also explored how the forces and properties of materials affect the behaviours of a product or system. Students designed and created a marble run with a sequence of steps.
Performing Arts
During Performing Arts during Term 2, Grade Three students applied their knowledge from last term by reading music when learning to play several songs on the recorder. They focused on developing their physical techniques and grew in confidence as they shared their performances with peers, using a success criteria when giving and receiving valuable feedback on their progression with each other.
Visual Arts
This term, students in Year 3 learned to create artworks using a range of new materials and techniques including fineliners to draw patterns and chalk pastel to blend two colours. They reflected on the process taken to make their art as well as the completed product. Students worked alongside a community artist as they created their own original canvas art for our upcoming Art Show. They worked towards being courageous artists who gave new techniques a try, and they worked safely in the art room. Students have had an exciting time this term in the Visual Arts room.
Japanese
This term in Japanese, the Grade 3 students developed their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills through the Unit ‘I went to the Zoo’. Students learned to identify, say and write the Japanese names of a variety of zoo animals. They built on their speaking and listening skills through learning to ask and answer the question “What did you see?” Students continued to have opportunities to revise Hiragana characters. They also learnt about cultural events in Japan such as Ohanami and Children’s Day.
PE
In Grade 3 PE classes, students continued to develop their fundamental movement skills while exploring more challenging games and sports. They refined their techniques and strategies, focusing on fair play and teamwork. Students refined their skills in different Athletic events with the opportunity to compete in these at Athletics Day. Social skills were emphasised through cooperative play and team sports, fostering empathy and leadership abilities.
