Business Day

Plenty Campus

Jemima Dillion, Year 11, Plenty Campus

On Friday 16 August, our Plenty Campus VCE business management students had the opportunity to demonstrate and use their knowledge from class, to design, manage and operate a ‘business’ for a day. The students managed a range of different business initiatives, which included selling slime, stickers, hosting raffles, guess the lolly jar competitions and a basketball shootout.  The students worked collaboratively in groups for almost a month, to create engaging, fun and successful businesses. The businesses were available to both primary and secondary students, with some profiting anywhere between 75 dollars to almost 400. One student who ran a business will also discuss the activity from an insider perspective.

'The business day was a valuable experience, and our group’s efforts led to a profit of $377. Business day allowed us to explore the dynamics of running a business, from planning to execution. Each of us contributed $20, which we used to purchase supplies for the day.

After researching what was popular among primary and high school students, our group decided to sell stickers and croc charms. We chose croc charms and stickers of cartoons and other things that are popular amongst the younger primary students, such as Spider-Man croc charms and floral stickers. This decision resulted in the success of our business, especially as our primary customers were younger students, who really engaged with our products. Our research paid off, as we were able to cater to their interests and preferences effectively.

After all members were given their $20 back, there was a total of $297 profit. Donating this money added a meaningful layer to the experience, reminding us that business can also have a positive impact on the community. This day taught us valuable lessons in business planning, teamwork, market research, and the importance of giving back.'
