Auslan Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

This fortnight in Auslan, Students will learn about ‘Farm Animal’ signs. The signs taught will be: Farm, Animal, Cow, Sheep, Lamb, Duck, Bull, Pig, Horse, Dog, Cat, Donkey, Mouse, Goat, Rooster, Chicken, Rabbit, Goose, Frog, Fish, Farmer and Tractor. Some activities catered to year levels will include drawing a favourite animal and signing it to peers, acting like an animal (miming) and students guessing it by signing what they think the animal is, and playing a ‘silent game’ where animal names will also need to be signed along with the colour of that animal. All activities require silence to challenge students in using their knowledge of signing the words they have learnt.

The next lesson following ‘Farm Animals’, will be about ‘Describing Animals’. Students will learn to sign the following words: fur, feather, smooth, rough, smelly, jumpy, slow and fast. Students will participate in activities that will involve signing the name of an animal and signing the words to describe a particular feature of that animal. Grade 56 students will engage in a version of a celebrity heads game called ‘Silent Farm Animal Heads’. All activities will rely on students to be in silence to encourage solely using Auslan.

As our students will begin to build their repertoire of words, engage in conversations at home and enjoy practising signs together as learnt by our students!

Keep updated on learning Auslan each fortnight in our community newsletter!

Kind Regards
