Term 2 round up

Cross country

And that's a wrap for cross country in 2024! Our cross country campaign ended with the JSSATIS carnival at Rokeby Police Academy on Thursday 20 June. Though the day may have been miserable, our athletes were not. Spirits were high and all athletes embraced the day with great excitement. In a show of remarkable resilience, we had some great results with all athletes running their absolute best. Sylvie Gundry (Year 5), pictured below, capped off a great cross country season, finishing second in her year group.

Thank you to Kristy Lyden who braved the conditions and helped for the day, and to Mr Messer who provided great motivation, support and much needed shelter.

Netball

The inaugural 2024 Hart Primary School Netball Championships were hosted by Netball Tasmania on Friday 21 June at the South East Stadium, Sorell. Our team played some great netball against other primary schools from around southern Tasmania. We made it to the semi-finals but unfortunately were knocked out by a very strong Sacred Heart College mixed team (who went on to comfortably win the tournament). Our team played their hearts out and we couldn’t be prouder of their efforts. Well done to coach Miss Jordan and all players. Thank you too to all parents who helped out on the bench during the day and came to support and cheer on the team.

An extra special thanks to all coaches and managers – there would be no team without you and the College is extremely grateful for all you do!

I wish all families a lovely and relaxing term break.

Netball/Football Round Robin

Thank you to Year 5/6 Netball Coordinator, Glynis Devereux for providing the following report.

Last Friday 28 June, the Southern Tasmanian Catholic Primary Schools Sports Association (STCPSSA) held a Netball Round Robin and a Girls Football Round Robin at the New Town Sporting complex. St Mary's College had eight netball teams participate – three Year 6 and five Year 5 groups – and two Year 6 football teams. The girls played against seven other Catholic primary schools in a fun-filled day. What is so fantastic about this annual day is there are no scores kept; rather it is a day for learning about the game of netball and making new friends, many of whom they will meet up with again in Year 7. This year marked the launch of football program, and it is hoped this too will become an annual event.

Our students represented SMC beautifully both on and off the court, as well as showing lots of netball skills. A special thanks to two of the senior girls who helped out: Rozalia Arnold (Year 9), who umpired the football, and Jayne Robinson (Year 7), who umpired the netball. Both students were an absolute credit to the College. A fantastic day enjoyed by all!
