Exciting Changes Ahead: New Victorian Literacy and Numeracy 2.0 Curriculum
Dear Parents and Carers,
We are excited to share an important update about changes in how numeracy will be reported this year at Kingswood Primary School. As part of implementing the Victorian Literacy and Numeracy 2.0 Curriculum, we will shift how we assess and communicate your child’s progress in numeracy.
What is changing?
A key update this year is introducing one progression point for numeracy. This means that, unlike previous years where students’ numeracy progress was reported across multiple levels or specific areas, numeracy will now be assessed using a singular progression point.
This streamlined approach will help us focus on overall numeracy development, ensuring that students master the essential mathematics concepts and skills. While this change means there will be less fragmentation in the reporting, it still reflects a comprehensive view of your child’s understanding of numeracy, encompassing problem-solving, mathematical reasoning and applying skills in real-world contexts.
Why is this change happening?
The decision to have only one progression point for numeracy this year is part of an effort to simplify assessment and reporting, making it easier for parents and carers to understand where their child is in their numeracy learning journey. This approach will give a more transparent and direct view of your child’s abilities without too many separate categories or levels.
By having a single progression point, we aim to focus more on how well students grasp core numeracy skills and concepts and less on breaking those skills down into multiple subcategories. This will allow teachers to provide more meaningful feedback and support in key areas where improvement or further development is needed.
What does this mean for your child?
This change means that your child's numeracy progress will be assessed more holistically, with a focus on their overall understanding of numeracy concepts. Instead of receiving feedback on a range of separate numeracy skills, there will now be one clear point showing how they progress within the subject area.
While this change simplifies the reporting structure, it does not diminish the depth of teaching or learning that your child will experience. Teachers will still support every child in developing their mathematical skills across a variety of areas, but the way this progress is communicated will be more straightforward and unified.
What can you expect from this new system?
Simplified Reports: This year, numeracy progress will be communicated using a single progression point, making it easier for you to understand where your child is at in their numeracy development.
More explicit Feedback: In this Semester's reports, you’ll receive focused feedback on your child’s overall numeracy achievement, with specific insights into where they excel and where they may need additional support at home.
Targeted Support: In class, teachers will still provide tailored goals to help each student strengthen their numeracy skills, but now with a more precise focus on the overall development of numeracy concepts and skills.
Looking Ahead
We are excited to implement these changes and believe the new reporting system will give parents and carers a more meaningful and accessible understanding of their child’s numeracy progress. We look forward to working with you to support your child’s growth in this crucial learning area.
If you have any questions about the new numeracy progression point or how it will affect your child, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or our school leadership team.
Thank you for your continued support.
