School Wide Positive Behaviour Supports
What is SWPBS?
Key Components SWPBS stands for School Wide Positive Behaviour Support. SWBPS is a framework for developing and explicitly teaching appropriate and positive behaviours. Teaching, modelling and reinforcing positive social behaviour is an important part of a student’s educational experience. Teaching behavioural expectations and acknowledging students for meeting them is a much more positive approach than waiting for misbehaviour to occur before responding.
Key Components
- An agreed upon and common approach
- A matrix of positively stated expectations
- Explicit teaching of expectations
- Regular and frequent opportunities to practise expected behaviours
- Incentive/rewards for meeting behavioural expectations
- Consistency of language
Encouraging our students
We encourage and acknowledge our students in a range of ways:
Classroom:
- Immediate verbal praise and acknowledgement, incorporating phrases of respect, kindness and gratitude
- Rewards and incentives, both individual and whole class
Cohort Level:
- MPPS values awards presented at cohort assemblies twice per term
Whole School:
- Weekly awards presented at whole school assemblies
- Recipients of MPPS values awards presented to the community at whole school assemblies twice per term
- Citizen of the month awards presented each term at whole school assemblies
- Award recipients promoted in the school newsletter each fortnight
Parents can help by:
- Discussing the behavioural expectations of their child
- Encouraging and acknowledging positive behaviours
- Using the same language to provide consistency between home and school
- Keep communication between you and your child’s teacher active throughout the school year
