Deputy Principal's Update

One of my key responsibilities in 2025 is preparing for the School’s official registration review by the Office of the Education Registrar (OER), as required for all Tasmanian schools.
This important process involves gathering evidence, analysing current legislation and standards, and reflecting on best practice across all areas of school life. It provides a valuable opportunity for us to examine every aspect of Friends’—from curriculum and student wellbeing to operations and finance—ensuring we remain aligned with both regulatory requirements and our own high expectations.
The review encourages honest reflection and meaningful conversations about what we do well and where we can grow, always with the goal of improving student outcomes. While it is a significant undertaking, it also affirms the broader role of education—beyond reading, writing and arithmetic—and speaks to the holistic experience we aim to offer our students, grounded in our Quaker values.
In May 2025, OER representatives will visit the School, tour our facilities, and speak with a range of staff and community members. Their feedback offers an external perspective that helps us strengthen our programs and practices. This process is not simply about identifying shortcomings—it’s about celebrating strengths and striving for continual improvement.
A highlight of this work has been collaborating closely with staff who are new to the registration process. Their insights and ideas have been invaluable. In particular, I’d like to acknowledge the contributions of Esther Hill and Megan Eddington, our new Director of Teaching and Learning, whose leadership and fresh perspectives are shaping exciting developments in teaching and learning at Friends’.
I’m also deeply grateful to Amy Thole, our new Executive Officer, whose behind-the-scenes coordination keeps everything running smoothly—and keeps me on track!
We are working towards securing another five years of registration, and we feel confident in our preparation for the OER’s review.
If you have any questions about the process, I’d be happy to speak with you.
Kind regards,
Shaun O'Rourke - Deputy Principal
