1/2 incursion

The Merri Creek (Management Committee) came to us!
There was lots of excitement in the air with the 1/2s this week as many of them expected to go on an excursion to the Merri Creek! However, last week's newsletter author made a bit of a mistake last week, I'm afraid - I had in fact organised an incursion.
Angela Foley from the Merri Creek Management Committee (MCMC) saw 1/2E, F, and C on Wednesday and 1/2A, B, and D on Thursday for the specialist Community Inquiry program.
We sat around a giant map of the Merri Creek and learnt about indigenous plants and how these are special to the Country that we're on (Wurundjeri Woi-Wurrung) as opposed to native plants (anywhere in Australia). The two plants that we focused on were Buath (the Woi Wurrung word for Kangaroo grass) and Garawun (Lomandra) and these are two of the plants that we will be planting in June. Students did the most beautiful botanical drawings, noticing all of the little details.
We also furthered our understanding of the Eastern Kulin Nation seasons - we're just entering Waring season now, as shown by the Bardi moth 'skins' that Angela showed us.
The MCMC are supporting our Landcare grant to create three new indigenous gardens here at NPS including along Murphy Street beside the new Learning Worlds. We'd love your support too, so please get on board the working bees that the awesome Buildings & Grounds Committee are organising.

We greatly look forward to continuing to learn about Wurundjeri Country next term and creating new gardens that reflect where we are. In the meantime, I wish you deeply relaxing holidays and hope that you all manage to get your kids down to the creek for some nature time - look for signs that we're in Waring season! Fungi, moths, and more!
