Year One - Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

We have had a wonderful start to Term 2, although it's been a short week. We have learned about celebrations such as Easter and ANZAC day along with our regular lessons. We also gathered as a whole school, for an ANZAC day service led by our Year 6 school leaders.

Religious Education focus: This week we have focused on the Easter/Resurrection story. This has been a difficult concept to understand, however has led to many questions and wonderings. 

English focus:This week we have focused on words that have 'igh' and 'ie' to make the long vowel 'i' sound. Here are some words that can be reinforced at home.

Mathematics focus: We learned about place value of two digit numbers by playing this quick game. Ask your child to explain this game to you. A printed version will come home next week after we've had lots of practice at school.

 SEL: No SEL lessons due to school closure for ANZAC day.

History:  This term we will focus on the book 'My Place' by Nadia Wheatly, to learn about Australian History and Indigenous culture. Our weekly English book will also have an Indigenous focus.Our overarching inquiry question will be 'How does our past shape who we are'? We will explore this topic through Religion, History and Literacy.

AUSLAN: This week we are revising letters and numbers in AUSLAN.

Next week we are learning about... 

Religious Education focus: We will start learning about Mary the mother of Jesus as an important figure in our Catholic faith. Throughout this term we will look at scripture and stories from the Bible within a biblical timeline. The following is an illustration of some of the focus topics. 

English focus: Starting next week we will be looking at a series of books by Adam Goods, next week's book is 'Ceremony'. 

Mathematics focus: Students will focus on Place Value of two digit numbers. 

SEL: Students will be learning about specific vocabulary relating to our morning check-in routine. 

History: We will continue to work with on our Inquiry question based on the book 'My place'.
