Safety, Respect and Learning

In STSS, we have begun our focus based on the Biological Sciences and the Technologies curriculum areas.

Science

This term, our junior students will continue learning about how plants and animals have basic needs, and explore how the places where plants and animals live provide these needs. As they move forward, students will begin to understand that plants and animals also have special features that help them survive.

Grade Three and Four students will continue learning about the different life cycles of plants and animals. They will also start to explore how different living things in a habitat have specific roles (consumers, producers and decomposers). They will also investigate how these roles are connected in food chains.

Students in Grades Five and Six will review how organisms have evolved over time to thrive in their environments. Following on from this, students will start to learn about habitats and how they can be described by their physical conditions, such as temperature, water, and light. They will also explore how changes to these conditions, including those caused by human activity, can impact the growth and survival of organisms.

Technologies

This term, students will continue to gain skills and broaden their knowledge of the digital technologies curriculum through their Science learning. In addition to this, students will gain exposure to the Design Technologies curriculum exploring key concepts including:

-Focusing on developing their creativity and critical thinking skills. -Learning to generate and evaluate ideas for sustainable solutions.

-Using design thinking to communicate their ideas and create their own designs with various tools and materials.

-Reflecting on their design processes and consider the roles of people in design and technology careers and how these contribute to society.
