Year Six - Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

Dear Families,

This week, we were glad to welcome back our students to build on a successful first term. They came back ready to learn and refreshed from holidays, and the shorter week helped them settle back into school routines.

On Thursday morning, the school held an Anzac Day prayer service, in which students paid respect and prayed for peace. We hope all our families enjoy a safe, restful and reflective long weekend.

This week we learnt about...

Religious Education Focus:

Following on from Easter last Sunday, this week students learnt about the Stations of the Cross, the traditionally depicted fourteen events that comprise the Passion of Jesus Christ.

English Focus:

Reading:

Our students' grammar focus this week was on the use of prepositions and adverbials. They continued to practise their reading fluency by reading about the Anzacs.

Writing:

In preparation for this term's novel, Us Mob Walawurru, our students learnt some background information about Indigenous Australian culture. In their sentence-level writing, they focused on the use of the conjunctions 'because', 'but' and 'so', as well as the use of appositives.

Mathematics Focus:

This week, students began their fractions unit by placing fractions on a number line and looking at how to compare fractions by using a fraction wall and shapes.

Integrated Studies Focus

Following on from the founding of Australia as a federated nation last term, our students learned this week about our country's system of laws and government.

Social & Emotional Learning Focus

Students learnt to identify character strengths in fictional characters and understand how these strengths are shown through their actions.

Auslan Focus

In Auslan, students learnt signs we can use in the classroom, such as 'Everyone stand up' and 'Are you ready? Let's go'.

Kind regards,

The Year 6 Team
