Year Five - Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Welcome back! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable break. It’s been so lovely having the students back this week - to reconnect and hear about their holiday experiences. The students have settled in beautifully and are already showing a strong sense of focus and readiness for the exciting learning ahead.

Students came together for a special Anzac Day prayer service on Thursday, taking part in a meaningful tribute to those who served reflecting on the importance of peace.

Religious Education Focus:

Next week, students will begin exploring their Inquiry focus: “Big fires start from small sparks.” They’ll be learning about how small actions can lead to big change, and as part of this, they’ll be looking closely at Mary’s role in the Catholic faith. Through her courage, faith, and trust in God, Mary became a spark that helped ignite great change in the world — a powerful example for us all.

English Focus

The students started with the new book "Black Cockatoo" written by Carl Merrison and Hakea Hustler.  Next week in Writing, students will be planning and drafting a character analysis paragraph using a Single-Paragraph Outline (SPO). They’ll use the notes they’ve gathered to help structure their ideas and write the paragraph of their analysis.

Mathematics Focus

Students will continue to learn how to compare and order fractions, and begin to learn about improper fractions.

Auslan Focus

Next week in Auslan, students will be learning how facial expressions, especially the direction of our eyebrows, help show whether a person is asking an open or closed question. They'll explore how this works in signing and practise useful everyday phrases such as:

  • What do we have today?
  • Do we have English today?
  • Today we have Art
  • Next is Maths
  • Performing Arts
  • At school

Social/ Emotional Learning Focus

Next week, students will be exploring the concepts of positive and negative self-talk. They’ll learn to recognise the impact that our inner voice can have on our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Through discussions and activities, students will begin building a vocabulary of positive self-talk and practise ways to strengthen these skills in their daily lives.
