Harmony Day / Better Buddies Day

On Monday we celebrated our first Better Buddies Day alongside Harmony Day, what a wonderful day it was. We engaged in sharing the many cultures, backgrounds and tradtions of the families at St John's, as well as learning how we can celebrate our diversity. Throughout the school day the students learnt about the Harmony Day values, of inclusiveness, a sense of belonging for everyone and respect.

The Prep students learnt about the Italian tradition of making gnocchi lead by one of our talented parents, Lu  V(Evie and Sam) and her team of wonderful knowledgable cooks! The students learnt about the creation of gnocchi, the ingredients and the techniques to make the delicious pasta.

Penny  Tshared with the Year 2s the tradtions of Greek biscuts, made by (Christan 2O) and James' (Prep W) Grandmother. The students even got to take a sample home to enjoy.

In Year 2 and 4, Denise R(Edie and Oscar) shared the Chinese Zodiac signs and the story of the 12 animals. Chinese Zodiacs recounts a race organised by the Jade Emperor to decide which animals would be included in the calendar and in what order. The first twelve animals to cross a river, each with their own unique characteristics, were rewarded with having a year named after them.

As a school community we were so fortunate to learn from the students and families themselves at our whole school assembly. Thank you to Alia , Ava and Mia , Alexandra and Wendy H - Clara, Javier and Isabel. We learnt so much about India, Lunar New Year, Greek Culture and El Salvador.

A huge thank you to our wonderful Harmony Day volunteers. St John's is a rich, welcoming, giving, supportive and diverse community, it is truly a blessing.

We look forward to our Term 2 Better Buddies Day on Monday 19 May.

Ride 2 School Day

A big thank you to all those who participated in our annual Ride2School Day. It was another joyful morning, so many smiles. Starting our Friday morning with a walk, ride or scoot with the community showed why our community is so special. We encourage riding, walking or scooting to school any day! Our Ride2School Day truly achieved the goals of the day:

  • Promote Healthy Lifestyles – integrates physical activity, helping students and adults to incorporate walking and biking into a daily routine and all year round.

  • Strengthen the Community – neighbours and families have an opportunity to interact with each other while walking and biking on their way to school and bringing together a sense of community.

  • Raise Environmental Awareness – walking and biking to school results in fewer vehicles on the streets therefore reducing air pollution and traffic congestion.

  • Promote Walking and Biking Safely – children develop and learn life skills from adults accompanying them along walks preparing them for road safety and personal awareness skills.

  • Increase School Spirit – children and adults alike have the opportunity to come together and celebrate the event while taking pride in what they are doing.
