Junior Learning Community

JLC (Year 1 & 2)

Year 1:

This week, we have continued our exciting learning journey in Mathematics by focusing on subitising and partitioning numbers to 20. In Literacy, the children have been exploring homophones and revising nouns and verbs. Over the past two weeks, we have also practiced reading and spelling tricky words. Additionally, the students have been writing recounts, concentrating on crafting super sentences that include a capital letter, a full stop, make sense, and feature a noun.

In Inquiry, the students have further developed their understanding of directions by using Bee Bots and giving each other directional instructions to draw simple pictures.

To conclude our Religion unit on Lent, we held a special prayer ritual where students wrote stories of sadness, just like Jesus. They then scrunched up their stories and placed them in a bucket to symbolize new life emerging for us, where sadness is replaced by joy and light—just as Jesus experienced.

Our Outdoor Education afternoon was a great success! All students enthusiastically joined the activities, finishing off with sausages in bread and juice. We hope everyone enjoyed learning new games and playing with friends.

Thank you for all your support throughout Term 1. We hope you and your families enjoy a well-deserved break.

Year 2

Wow, what a busy and productive term we have had in Grade 2! Students have adapted to many changes and kept a positive and open-mind, they should be feeling very proud of their efforts as we come to the end of Week 10!

This week we have been busy completing some end of term assessments where students have been able to show their teachers all that they have been learning and practicing throughout the term. We are so proud of the skills and progress shown throughout these and look forward to Term 2 when we can continure to build their knowledge and skills.

In Grade 2, we’ve been enjoying creating and following a list of directions using ‘directional language’ such as turn, forwards, backwards, left, right, north, south, east, west, clockwise and anticlockwise. Students were able to apply these to a number of activities including directing a partner from an A to B point and most excitingly using the Bee-Bots to direct them on several maps/paths.

You will notice we’ve still sent home a reader or two with your child. It would be very beneficial to continue reading practice over the holidays and we would appreciate you making the time to listen to or read to your child over the break.

We wish you all a very Happy and Safe Easter and look forward to seeing you all back in a few weeks, rested and ready for Term 2.
