School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

Victoria University Secondary College has been committed to implementing School-wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) for many years and remains dedicated to empowering our students through this well-established initiative.
SWPBS is a systems approach for establishing the social culture and individualised supports needed for all students to achieve both social and academic success.
It’s a redesign of the school's environment.
SWPBS is:
- Positive and Proactive
- Preventative
- Dependent on adult consistency
- Evidence based; data informed
- Responsive to the needs of ALL students
- Encompassing of all other school programs
The implementation of SWPBS has helped teachers better support and challenge students, leading to improved academic results.
Key achievements in 2024 include:
Higher NAPLAN Scores – 67% of Year 9 students performed well in Reading (0.9% increase) and 65% in Numeracy (1.8% increase).
Improved Attendance – Our student attendance rate was 89%, above the 86% average for similar schools.
AToSS results show stronger student engagement and community connection, with our student’s sense of connectedness rising from 66% in 2023 to 72% in 2024.
SWPBS 2025 Goals:
Fostering a Positive School Climate – Encouraging a supportive and inclusive atmosphere where students feel safe, valued, and respected.
Teaching and Reinforcing Expected Behaviours – Clearly defining, teaching, and reinforcing positive behaviours across all school settings.
Reducing Problematic Behaviours – Implementing proactive strategies to minimize disruptive behaviours and improve student self-management.
Enhancing Student Engagement and Learning – Creating a structured environment that maximizes instructional time and academic success.
Encouraging Consistency Among Staff – Ensuring all educators use a common approach to behaviour expectations, rewards, and consequences.
Using Data-Driven Decision-Making – Collecting and analysing behavioural data to inform strategies and interventions.
Promoting Social-Emotional Well-being – Supporting students in developing self-regulation, resilience, and positive peer interactions.
Strengthening Family and Community Involvement – Engaging families and community members in reinforcing positive behaviours beyond the school setting.
By creating a positive and inclusive learning environment, SWPBS is helping our students succeed academically and stay engaged in their learning.
