Around the Primary Classrooms

Kinder
This term in Kinder, we have been learning about First Nations Australians. We have explored who they are and why they are important, spent some time yarning and sharing stories, and learned about the Aboriginal flag and what its colours represent. We have also looked at the meaning of Country, explored special landmarks like Uluru, and talked about how we can care for the land around us. We have really enjoyed developing a growing understanding and respect for First Nations perspectives, and loved finishing the unit off by making Aboriginal Flag cookies with our Year 10 Big Girl Friends!
Year 1
Year 1 has been very busy this term. We started the term with Grandparent's Day and wrote all about what kind on grandmas we think we will be when we are older. We also drew ourselves as grandmas!
We have done a unit called how things have changed. We watched a video about the past and some looked serious. The cameras back then took so long to take a photo so they had to stand still for so long and sometimes they looked like a robot. We also interviewed our grandparents about when they were little on Grandparent's Day.

We also learned about communication and how Aboriginal people have used symbols to communicate. We used Aboriginal symbols things like boomerang, and weather and animal tracks including emus and kangaroos. In my drawing I used symbols to communicate people sitting around a fire and hunting snakes that are coming close.

Year 2
Year 2 had an amazing time at Nature Play last week! Their curious minds were sparked by spotting insects, creating magical potions and imaginative dinner menus, building the foundation for a fire, and exploring the creek through fun, pretend play. Students worked together, tried new ideas, and discovered the joy of learning outdoors, developing teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills along the way.
Year 4 - Long Day Excursion
On November 14, Year 4 ventured on an extraordinary excursion to Blue Lagoon. At 8:15am, we hopped on the bus and our exciting adventure had begun. When we got to Blue Lagoon Camp, we were greeted by Lily, our instructor for the day. Then we had a fabulous play on the huge playground that included a 30m long slide, five swings, two trampolines and many more amazing pieces of equipment.
After that, we started walking to the beautiful Park Beach. As soon as we saw the roaring waves, we were all in awe. After that, we split into two groups. Group 1 started getting into their wetsuits and enjoyed a wonderful hour surfing. The coaches helped us to catch the perfect waves. Then, we switched groups and the first group joined the epic sandcastle competition.
After surfing and sandcastles, we had lunch which was terrific chicken burgers. Then Year 4, split into their groups. Group 1 did rock climbing first. Some people got to the top which was amazing. The second group got to swing on the big dipper, a thrilling rope swing that swung you around when you pulled a red cord to disconnect the second rope from the first when you were in midair. Then we had scrumptious muffins for afternoon tea before swapping over groups for the rock climbing and swing activities. For dinner, we devoured delicious bolognese and for dessert, we had ice-cream and toppings. After having the most brilliant and splendid experience, we arrived back at school at 7:20pm.

Year 6 Navy
Year 6 Navy have had a wonderful and busy start to the term! Students have been enjoying a wide range of activities, from Learn-to-Swim and Fire Safety sessions, to the excitement of the Billie Jean King Cup Australian team visiting our school...and even getting the chance to watch them train!
We’ve also been getting hands-on, learning to play tennis and practicing new skills, as well as exploring our faith by learning how to pray the Rosary. A visit from Aboriginal singer and performer Scott Darlow had us laughing until we cried!
In the classroom, students have been discovering why people migrate and exploring migration through interviews with migrants. We’ve also been getting to know each other better by interviewing classmates and creating personal biographies. Science has been full of exploration as we learn about changing states of matter, while in mathematics we’ve tackled topics like the area of triangles, Cartesian planes, and exploring prisms and pyramids.
As we head into the final weeks of the term, 6 Navy are looking forward to making more lasting memories and finishing their last primary year together in the best way possible!
From Mount Carmel to Japan: Year 5 Joins Global School Series
In the middle of the year, Mount Carmel College received a request from the Australia-Japan Foundation within the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade to participate in the making of a textbook about life in Australia. The publication is being arranged by a professor who is part of an academic group in a university in Japan. The book titled ‘Australia’ will be part of a series of books for children/young adults, which includes schools in other countries. A journalist working with the group visited to interview the teachers and photograph a day in the life of Year 5. Information provided included the history and number of students at our school, a weekly timetable, as well as events during the school year and activities available after school.
‘Australia’ is due to be published in September 2026. Thank you to all staff and students who participated in this experience.
