As part of our current unit of inquiry, students have been exploring the central idea, 'People share stories to learn about themselves and others’. This inquiry came alive during our two recent incursions: The Flying Bookworms Theatre Company and The Knowing Project - African Drumming incursion led by the talented Lamine Sonko.

Flying Bookworms

Students recently enjoyed an exciting live theatre experience with the visiting Flying Bookworms theatre company. The performers used engaging storytelling and puppets to bring several classic fairytales to life on stage. We were treated to interactive retellings of beloved tales, including ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’, ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’, and ‘The Giant Turnip’. We spotted a few actors in-the-making who got to showcase their skills up on stage too! The show was designed to foster a love for literature and provide an engaging, memorable introduction to classic narrative structures.

Journey to Africa

Students were immersed in African drumming, song, and storytelling, fostering connections to key curriculum areas: Social and Emotional Wellbeing, Creative Learning and Cultural Competencies. Lamine introduced students to the ‘Kalimba’ (or ‘Thumb Piano’) while sharing stories about life in Africa, the significance of water and fascinating African animals. The calming tones of the Kalimba and Lamine’s storytelling had our students mesmerised! The energy then shifted as students participated in African drumming, exploring rhythms, patterns and movement. They also had the opportunity to dance and learned about the power of music to connect and communicate. This experience was the perfect way to learn how people use music and storytelling to share cultural stories. We are so proud of our learners and their open mindedness to embrace new cultural perspectives.
